Communications scholarship provides a decade of impact

For ten years, the Cole Lawson Communications Scholarship has supported the ambitions of talented UQ Bachelor of Communication students looking to begin building their career in the industry.

As we celebrate the impact of the UQ community on Giving Day this year, we caught up with the scholarship’s founder – Margaret Lawson – and two of its recipients to hear how it has impacted their lives.

When talking on her inspiration for the scholarship, Margaret – Managing Director of Cole Lawson Communications – recalls the lack of opportunities for students when she was undertaking her undergraduate studies.

Now, ten years on, the scholarship has become a steady pipeline for communications students directly into industry, building their employability and introducing them to the day-to-day of the profession.

“When I was a student, there were no scholarships or opportunities within the communications field,” Margaret said.

“I thought that creating an opportunity would both encourage excellence amongst existing students and also attract more high achievers into arts and communications in particular.”

“An unexpected by-product of the scholarship over 10 years has been the awareness it has created amongst students within the industry about my company, which has led us to attract many talented UQ graduates as their number one choice of employer.

“We recently hired a UQ graduate whose GPA was 7.0 – so, the top of the class – and we were her top choice of workplace. That was a huge testament to the impact of the scholarship.”

Along with at least $3,000 to support recipients’ studies, the scholarship paves the opportunity for an internship at Cole Lawson, where students entrench themselves in the daily engagements of the firm – from high-level client engagement to business cultivation and presentations.

While Margaret didn’t study at UQ herself, when she came to establishing the scholarship, it felt like the natural fit based on her positive interactions with the University and its alumni.

“I didn’t personally study at UQ, but I had really positive experiences as an employer of UQ graduates and as a guest lecturer at the university,” Margaret said.

“UQ has been an exceptional organisation to work with and has consistently gone above and beyond to make Cole Lawson feel appreciated, valued and like a true partner in this endeavour.

“When we needed a lecture theatre to film in for an experimental project, the University let us use its resources during the semester break because of our partnership – it is absolutely not a one-way street, and I constantly feel treated like a VIP at UQ.”

After operating for a decade, the program has built a community of young professionals leaving their mark on the world in a range of jobs across the industry.

“Now that we are more than 10 years into the scholarship, we have our own ‘alumni’ of scholarship winners,” Margaret said.

“All have worked with us as interns and it’s been remarkable to watch their progression from talented students to outstanding professionals.”

“Many of their professional accomplishments are far beyond what I expected of myself at their age, and it gives me great pride to see them succeed and to have been even a small part of that journey.”

As Margaret looks back on the burgeoning careers of these students, she sees their wide-ranging achievements as testament to the diversity of career outcomes borne by arts and humanities degrees.

For her, one of the stories that has stuck is that of 2012 Cole Lawson Scholar, Tanita McPherson.

“One of our wonderful scholarship recipients, Tanita, was accepted into QANTAS’s graduate program after winning the scholarship,” Margaret said.

“Years on, she is still with the company and her career trajectory into a management role is a massive credit to her, and also a huge source of pride for us.

“I check in from time to time via LinkedIn with many of the scholarship alumni and I am constantly impressed by the diversity of their roles, experiences and how they have used their Arts degree from UQ to pursue their individual paths and passions.”

Bachelor of Arts '20

2019 Cole Lawson Scholar Odette Miller says that her experience with Cole Lawson galvanised her resolve to find a way to marry her two interests – communications and art – in her future career.

“Receiving the Cole Lawson Scholarship was an amazing confirmation that I was on the right path, and that my hard work at university was being recognised,” Odette said.

“As a student undertaking a dual degree in Arts and Communication majoring in Public Relations and Art History, it sometimes felt like a challenge to navigate both disciplines.

“Receiving this scholarship affirmed that I had the capabilities to succeed in a career in public relations and also fuelled my determination to find a role which fulfilled both of my passions.”

It was the skills and industry exposure she gained through her internship that helped drive her directly into graduate employment after her studies had concluded earlier this year.

“I had previously interned or worked in Public Relations roles in-house and for not-for-profit organisations, but I knew that working in a consultancy would be essential to round out my skill set,” Odette said.

“My time at Cole Lawson provided me with essential knowledge about the industry and skills for navigating the work force, while also allowing me to work with some exciting clients.

“Having consultancy experience alongside the scholarship title has been attractive to employers and certainly helped me land my current role.”

She is now working at the junction of her two passions as a Marketing and Communications Coordinator for Flying Arts Alliance, an arts and cultural development organisation which delivers visual arts projects and services to regional and remote Queensland.

Bachelor of Communication graduate Laura Kane recalls the pride she felt when she was awarded her scholarship in 2018.

“It’s both humbling and motivating to know there are members of the community - complete strangers! - who are willing to support you because they believe in students’ potential,” Laura said.

“For me, receiving the Cole Lawson Communications Scholarship was a defining moment of my university degree.

“It was recognition of the hard work I’d put into my studies, the value of the support I received from my family, and the lessons I gained from mentors throughout my degree.”

Along with the financial assistance of the scholarship, her time as an intern at Cole Lawson is remembered fondly, and it ultimately proved to be the springboard she needed to move straight into graduate employment.

“I received the scholarship in the final semester of my degree. The bursary helped support my living and study expenses, allowing me to focus on my education and appreciate the last stretch of my time at UQ.

“I also had an opportunity to complete an internship through the Cole Lawson Communications Scholarship. During the 2-week work experience, I gained valuable industry experience and learned first-hand from professionals.

“I was lucky enough to gain employment because of this scholarship. I’m really grateful for the opportunities afforded to me and would like to thank Cole Lawson Communications and UQ for their support.”

Laura now works for YMCA Brisbane in their marketing team as their Social Media and Content Coordinator. She says she enjoys working across all the different services the YMCA offers, including social impact, child care, fitness, gymnastics, education, youth programs and more. More than anything, she loves working for an organisation whose profits go back into the community.
